Achieve Guitar Virtuosity by Mastering the Art of Improvisation: Online Guitar Lessons with Scott Henderson
Musical improvisation is, in itself, an art form. While it may seem as though improvised guitar solos spring from an almost supernatural place, successful improvisation requires a true commitment to technique and performance refinement. To achieve a well-articulated, organized, and unique sound, it is essential to approach the improvisation systematically, incorporating a solid understanding of the fundamentals of technical application.
Improvisation is the height of artistic expression. Every style and category of music – from the impromptus of the romantic era, to roots music, to contemporary rock – has a rich history of improvisation. Successful improvisations incorporate the raw honesty of the musician’s emotions into a particular musical framework, expanding and deepening the original composition, and allowing all the players to engage in a momentary musical dialogue. But improvisations aren’t just purely enthusiasm and instinct. In order to improvise fully integrated and cohesive solos into a larger musical work, musicians must physically master the diverse array of specific movements and disciplines within the art.
At Musicians Institute Online, we’ve developed a specialized curriculum with acclaimed jazz, rock, and blues guitarist Scott Henderson that helps intermediate players achieve greater fluency in the art of improvisation. These 10-week online guitar lessons address the essentials of modal progression identification, chord construction, phrasing, and coherent chromaticism, all within the context of live performance. The course will also help students become more dexterous and able to physically execute improvised solos seamlessly.
- During the course, students will receive instruction on the proper and efficient application of the five scale shapes across the whole fretboard.
- Developing a fretboard organizational system. A strong understanding of the geography of the fretboard is a crucial component of fluid phrasing. Scott Henderson will share his own personal fingerboard technique.
- Understanding the modes of the major scale and the melodic minor scale. Students will be introduced to the nuances of tonal production – how one fingering position can achieve different sounds.
- Phrasing and interpretation. Music is the expression of a particular idea – just as words can be read aloud with different intellectual and emotional intonations, music can be phrased in diverse ways. Students are given the tools necessary to achieve a greater depth of musicality, creativity, and bravery in phrasing.
